Peter Sedgley: 5 Decades
A retrospective
The Redfern Gallery, London
20 Cork Street, London, W1S 3HL
Private View - Tuesday 5 November 2024, 6-8pm
Curated in dialogue with Prof. Dr Omar Kholeif.
“The only British artist to have been associated with all of the movements dealing with illusion in the 1960s…Op art, kinetic art and light art”-Jasia Reichardt, curator, Cybernetic Serendipity.
“‘Full of art that glows, twitches, shudders and pulses. It makes your eyes feel alive, as if a bucket of water has been thrown in your face.’” – The Sunday Times
Enter the immersive world of Op Art pioneer Peter Sedgley in the most extensive retrospective survey of his work to be mounted in London. Presenting five decades of his art, the exhibition is anchored by trails of color and light that usher the visitor into a central vista where Sedgley’s sense of the ethereal and the enigmatic; the sensual and the spectral are explored in paintings on paper, canvas, panel, light and kinetic form.
Conceived and curated in dialogue with Dr Omar Kholeif, director of collections and senior curator, Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE and longtime trustee of SPACE, an organisation co-founded by Sedgley and Bridget Riley with Peter Townsend, the exhibition is also accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with an illuminating essay that situates Sedgley as one of the most significant masters of art and illusion.
